            This is an informal discussion among four NYC priests about their first impressions from reading the catechism.  Fr. Joseph Baker, parochial vicar of St. John the Martyr Parish, is the host.  The participants are Fr. Michael Dibble, Msgr. George Thompson, Msgr. Michael Wrenn, and Msgr. Walter Niebrzydowski.

Veterans of the Vineyard

Msgr. Walter Niebrzydowski interviews two senior priests, who are retired pastors but still actively engaged in ministry: Msgr. John Considine and Msgr. Charles McManus.

            Part 1: Career vs. Vocation.  All through their diverse assignments in schools and parishes the priests never lost sight of their primordial call to be “other Christs” to all to whom they ministered.

            Part 2:  Change as a Challenge.  The social, political, and technological changes of the century are reviewed regarding their influence on the laity and the spiritual and pastoral reactions of the clergy.

            Part 3: Changes in the Church.  The experiences of the priests in reacting to the changes in the Mass, sacraments, parish structure, role of the laity, and the dwindling number of clergy and religious.

            Part 4: Looking Ahead.  An exploration of their forecast for the new millennium and their testimony about facing their own frailty and death.

The Fathers of the Church

 

  Msgr. Walter Niebrzydowski interviews Fr. Boniface Ramsey, O.P., former Professor of                           Patristics at Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, NJ.

 

            Part 1: Patrology.  An explanation of the field of Patrology, or Patristics, identifying the                         great figures, their mentality, context, language, and influence.

            Part 2 Jesus as Savior.  An exploration of early soteriology, the study of God’s saving                              action in Jesus.

            Part 3:Patristic Spirituality.  A consideration of the Fathers as mystics and mystagogues,                           Christian “gurus” adept at leading believers along their journey to God.

            Part 4:Patristic Prayer.  An exposition of the Fathers’ interpretations of the biblical                                   injunction  to “pray always.”

                                Insight into Insight:

        The Life and Legacy of Fr. Bernard Lonergan, SJ

 

        Fr. Bernard Lonergan, S.J. (1904 – 1984) was a renowned Canadian philosopher and theologian, who taught at the Gregorian University in Rome, Harvard University, and Boston College.  His two influential major works are Insight: A Study of Human Understanding and Method in Theology.

         Msgr. Walter Niebrzydowski, a former student of Lonergan’s, interviews two Lonerganian scholars.  Fr. Terry Tekippe is Professor of Theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, LA.  Msgr. Richard Liddy, former professor at Seton Hall University, is research fellow at Woodstock Theological Center.

 

            Part 1:  The Four Levels of Consciousness. An interview with Fr.Tekippe on the operations of human knowing: experiencing, understanding, judging, and deciding..

            Part 2: Intellectual Conversion. A conversation with Msgr. Liddy on the influence of Plato, Newman, St. Thomas, and the empirical sciences on the early Lonergan.

            Part 3:  To Understand Understanding. A discussion with Fr. Tekippe and Msgr. Liddy about the questions that underlie Insight.
